Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bioidentical hormones are an alternative to traditional hormone replacement therapy for both men and women

What are bioidentical hormones?

Hormones are messengers that send signals to organs and systems to control almost every task your body performs, including sex and brain function, growth, and food breakdown. As we age, hormonal imbalances become more noticeable and can affect our daily lives. Bioidentical hormones are a man-made version almost identical to those that our body naturally produces. Because they are so similar, they are easier to metabolise and less likely to cause a reaction.

Bioidentical hormones are extracted from soy and yams and are available in many different forms including pills, patches, creams, gels, shots, and implants. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, Vitamin D and DHEA are all available as bioidentical hormones.

You can feel confident with your bioidentical hormone treatment because Mr. Shawqi will tailor it exactly to treat your hormonal imbalance.

Bioidenticals can be used to improve symptoms of:

  • Andropause (the “male menopause”)

What do different hormones do?

Estrogen – deals with the heart, blood pressure, bones, sleep, hair, skin and vaginal health. Key in women’s health and overall well-being.

Progesterone – controls anxiety and mood swings, sleep. A mood enhancer that is one of few natural antidepressants.

Testosterone – impacts vitality, ambition, red blood cell production, bone density, weight control, energy and libido. An anabolic steroid, also useful for women to strengthen muscles and bone density.

Vitamin D – controls mood, immunity, bone density and impacts auto-immune conditions. Because the majority of Vitamin  comes from the sun, there are often low levels in people in Northern Europe.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) – impacts vitality, energy, motivation and libido. The most prolific hormone in the body that converts into testosterone and oestrogen as required by the body.

Men

Experiencing a period of low energy, self esteem and decreased sex drive, amongst other symptoms, in their late 40s and 50s is common amongst men. Sometimes this is a result of low hormone levels. Testosterone levels decrease yearly (at less than 2%) from around 30.

FAQs

Synthetic hormones are not created structurally the same as hormones the body naturally produces, which can lead to uncomfortable side effects. They don’t tend to offer the same level of effectiveness at a molecular level.

Bioidentical hormones mimic those that the body naturally produces, making them effective on more biological pathways at all levels. There are generally less side effects as they are structurally an exact replica of the naturally produced hormones. Bioidentical hormones can be tailored exactly to you, unlike synthetic hormones which are only available in the doses that pharmaceutical companies offer.

A wide range of research shows that bioidentical hormone therapy has little in common with the side effects of synthetic hormones, and does not have the same risk of breast cancer, heart attack, blood clots and strokes. You can discuss any concerns you may have with friendly clinician in confidence.

Our clinician will test you for hormone levels before prescribing your treatment plan to ensure you get a prescription that’s tailored to you. Hormone levels are measured via a blood test.

Depending your age, lifestyle and individual circumstances, treatment time can differ between patients. Our friendly clinician will discuss your estimated treatment time with you at the diagnosis and prescription stage.

Many patients notice changes in their symptoms after 3 weeks. You should allow 8 weeks to start seeing a difference. You will have a review with us at this time to assess your needs and adjust your prescription if necessary.

Some patients do experience side effects with bioidentical hormones. These can include weight gain, headaches, indigestion, acne and tiredness. Women can also experience spotting, cramping and breast tenderness. Side effects often improve as your body gets used to the new hormone levels. If you use a patch, cream or gel to take your bioidenticals, your skin may itch or redden in the area you apply it.
